EloElo's $80M round: what India's microdrama boom means for brands

Story TV owner EloElo raised $80 million on 4 November 2026. Here is how big microdramas are in India and how brands already use the format with creators.

The short answer

EloElo Group, the Bengaluru company behind the Story TV microdrama app, announced an $80 million Series C on 4 November 2026, co-led by Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal, taking total funding to $130 million. TechCrunch reports over 118 million Indians watch microdramas monthly, and brands such as AJIO, Myntra and Swiggy have already run short episodic series with creators, mostly on Instagram.

Microdramas, the vertical soap operas told in one to two minute episodes, just got their biggest funding signal in India. On 4 November, Bengaluru's EloElo Group, which runs the Story TV app, announced an $80 million Series C. For brands that already pay creators to make Reels, this is worth a close look, because the format is moving from novelty to a real media channel.

How much did EloElo raise, and from whom?

The round was co-led by Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal, with MIT Investment Co. joining existing backers Play Ventures, Kalaari Capital, WaterBridge Ventures and Griffin Gaming Partners, according to TechCrunch. That takes total funding to $130 million. TechCrunch puts the valuation at $500 million; the PTI report carried by Outlook Business gives the same figure but attributes it to sources, and says it is about five times the last round. PTI converts the round to about ₹760 crore. The company has not confirmed the valuation itself.

How big is Story TV?

EloElo says its apps have over 40 million monthly active users and more than 300 million installs. Story TV has over 5,000 microdramas in six languages, adds a new one every three hours, and users spend 95 minutes a day on it on average, per PTI. Inc42 reports that Story TV works with more than 90 production studios, including Balaji Telefilms. TechCrunch, citing analysts, puts Story TV's own active users at over 33 million.

Founder and CEO Saurabh Pandey, a former Flipkart executive, told PTI that "Story TV shows us what India wants to watch." The money will go into original shows in Indian languages, AI-assisted production through its Dolphin AI tool, and launching microdramas outside India.

How big is the microdrama audience in India?

TechCrunch reports that more than 118 million people in India watch microdramas each month. Paying is a different story: Redseer estimates over 40 million people have paid at least once, but only 15 to 17 million pay monthly, and Ormax found 72% of viewers have never paid. Story TV mainly sells subscriptions, with some free, ad-supported content. Read those numbers as a large audience that is still working out what it will pay for.

How are Indian brands already using microdramas?

Mostly on Instagram, with creators, rather than inside the apps. Agency Reporter lists recent examples: AJIO's Valentine's week series "Suit Yourself", a seven-episode Reels series called "Party of Two" from Meta, and an AI-animated food series from Swiggy. afaqs reported Myntra's six-episode "Myntra Mohalla" with digital creators for the wedding season. JioHotstar also added a free, ad-supported microdrama section called Tadka in April 2026.

The playbook afaqs describes is close to creator marketing: release a cliffhanger outside the app, use creator reactions and POV clips, and track completion rate and next-episode clicks rather than likes. As Viren Sean Noronha of creative agency The New Thing told afaqs, "What a micro-series lets a brand do is own the format."

None of the sources we read gave verified costs or results for branded microdramas, so treat any agency claims of huge ROI with care until you see the numbers.

Our take from Delhi

A big round does not mean every brand needs a microdrama. But the habit is real: tens of millions of Indians now follow a story for weeks in vertical video. For a Delhi NCR brand, the cheap way in is a three to six episode series with one or two local creators who can act, posted on Instagram, with a clear hook at the end of each episode. Measure whether people come back for episode two before you spend on episode ten.

What it means for brands
  1. Test the format small: a 3 to 6 episode vertical series with one or two creators who can act, before committing to a long season.
  2. Measure completion rate and how many viewers return for the next episode, not just views and likes.
  3. Put the hook at the end of each episode so the series earns its next view instead of relying on paid reach.
  4. Ask for real cost and result numbers before buying a branded microdrama package; public data on returns is still thin.
  5. Label paid placements as ads under ASCI rules, and add an AI label if the series uses AI-generated faces or voices.

Questions people ask

What is a microdrama?

A scripted vertical video series told in short episodes of about one to two minutes, usually ending each episode on a cliffhanger. Apps like Story TV, Kuku TV and Quick TV host them, and brands also post them on Instagram.

How much did EloElo raise in November 2026?

$80 million in a Series C announced on 4 November 2026, co-led by Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal. Total funding is $130 million, and TechCrunch and PTI put the valuation at $500 million, which the company has not confirmed.

Do brands need their own app to run a microdrama?

No. Most Indian brand examples so far, such as AJIO's "Suit Yourself" and Meta's "Party of Two", ran as Reels series on Instagram, often with creators in the lead roles.
